The Boston Red Sox and free agent pitcher Justin Masterson agreed to a one-year, $9.25 million deal Thursday which will bring the former Red Sox product back to Boston.
A second round draft pick of the Sox in 2006, Masterson spent five seasons with the Cleveland Indians before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline last season.
The 29 year-old went 7-9 with a 5.88 ERA in 2014, making 25 starts and 28 total appearances for the Indians and Cardinals.
Masterson’s best season with Cleveland came in an All-Star 2013 campaign in which he went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 193 innings pitched.
In one-plus seasons with the Red Sox, before being traded to Cleveland for catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez in 2009, Masterson was 9-8 with a 3.76 ERA.
His new deal with the Red Sox includes a possible $2 million in performance bonuses.
