While the Boston Red Sox may have missed out on re-signing Jon Lester, the team has quickly taken to the task of recreating its starting rotation, acquiring pitcher Rick Porcello from the Detroit Tigers.Thursday, in exchange for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, and pitchers Alex Wilson and Gabe Speier.
The deal for Porcello comes just a day after the acquisition of starting pitcher Wade Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and hours before officially announcing the signing of free agent starter Justin Masterson, closing out a busy winter meetings for general manager Ben Cherington.
Porcello, Miley, and Masterson will join Clay Buchholz, the only member of the starting rotation remaining from the 2014 Red Sox team, as Boston continues to search for a true number one starter to replace Lester.
The 25 year-old Porcello, who turns 26 in a few weeks, went 15-13 with a 3.43 ERA for the Tigers last season, his sixth with the team. In his six seasons in Detroit, the 2007 first round draft pick was 76-63 with a 4.30 ERA and 655 strikeouts.
In his rookie season of 2009, Porcello had 14 wins and finished 3rd in the voting for the American League Rookie of the Year.
The Red Sox had 11 different pitchers start at least one game for them last season, and had a 4.36 ERA for starting pitchers which placed them 26th in the league.
In adding Porcello, Miley, and Masterson to the mix, the Red Sox will certainly look for more stability and consistency from their rotation.
The Red Sox acquired Cespedes last season at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Jon Lester to Oakland. The 29 year-old outfielder, who played 51 games for Boston, finished 2014 with an overall .260 batting average, 22 home runs, and 100 RBI in 152 games.
Cespedes, who is set to become a free agent following the 2015 season, had previously expressed uncertainty of whether he would be interested in re-signing with the Red Sox.
In three major-league seasons since being signed by the Oakland A’s, Cespedes has hit 71 home runs, and displayed his cannon of an arm, recordng 35 outfield assists in that time.
Wilson, 28, pitched in 18 games for Boston last season, going 1-0 with a 1.91 ERA. In 2013, he made 26 appearances for the Red Sox out of the bullpen, pitching to a record of 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings.
Speier, 19, a 19th round pick of the Red Sox in 2013, pitched for the GCL Red Sox at the Rookie level, making six starts and nine appearances, going 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA.
